Some love poetry for the day

Ode to a Plate of Spaghetti

@ 8.00pm on Valentine's Day on Botanic Avenue, Belfast by Beití Rua (From poetry submitted to Blas, the Irish-language service of the BBC, in honor of Lá Fhéile Bhalaintín!)
Tá turas fada romhat anocht
ón phláta chuig an bhéal
Lásaí móra spaghetti
le cúig nóiméid anuas nár ghéill!
It is a long journey ahead tonight
from the plate to the mouth
great strings of spaghetti
did not yield for five minutes.

Béile rómánsúil Lá Vailintín
'Sé an trua gur ordaigh mé spaghetti
Faoi sholas na gcoinnle, tá ciseach ceart
déanta den bhord, de m'aghaidh is de m'éidí!
A romantic Valentine dinner
A pity I ordered spaghetti
Under the light of the candles, it made a right mess
of the table, my face, and my clothes.

Seans nár thug sé faoi deara
mar tosaíonn sé air ag caint
Go grámhar, glacann sé mo lámh
Ach ar mo phláta, tá an seanphort á sheinnt.
Maybe he didn't notice
as he begins to speak
with love he takes my hand
but my plate played the same old tune.

Ní deir sé "Is tú mo Bhailintín"
Ná "tabhair póigín dom, a Bheití"
Ach as go brách leis le náire
ag fágáil mise lem' phláta spaghetti.
He did not say "You are my Valentine",
Nor "Kiss me, Betty."
but off he went with embarrassment
leaving me with my plate of spaghetti.

Ach anois, tá siad ag taisteal go triopallach
óm' phláta suas go mo bhéal
...bhuel, munar ghrá leis messy Beití
ní fiú é bheith i mo shaol!
But now they are travelling tidily
from my plate up to my mouth.
Well, unless he loves messy Betty,
he is not worth being in my life.
