Thug sé ordú do chailín glaoch isteach ar George Smith. Faoi cheann tamaill tháinig feairín beag dubh isteach. Dúradh leis gur mise a bheadh ina pháirtí oibre aige.

'Now Mr McRory, some white folk don't like to work with their coloured brethren. You know what happened the last time, man,' arsa George.

  • Dúrt leis nár chuir sé aon mhairg orm. Ansin d'éirigh McRory agus dúirt sé liom imeacht le George agus go múinfeadh sé mo cheard dom. Cheapas go raibh gáire magúil ar aghaidh an Éireannaigh. Ní fheadair éinne ach an chaint a bhí á dhéanamh ag George. Fuaireas deacair a chaint a thuiscint agus dúrt leis labhairt ábhar mall. Ag obair amuigh ar na dugaí a bheimis agus bheadh orainn earraí a thógaint de leoraithe ansin agus cuntas a coimeád orthu. Bhí gach earra ó stocaí ban go reoiteoirí ag teacht ós na leoraithe céanna. Bhí trucailí beaga ceathair- rothacha againn chun na hearraí a iompar ó áit go háit. Ní raibh aon dua agam teacht isteach ar an obair, cé go raibh cuid des na boscaí a bhí ar na leoraithe trom a ndóthain. Ach bhí taithí fachta agam i Sasanaar ardú meáchana. Bhíomair ag gíotáil linn gur ghlaoigh George isteach orm chun tae a ól. Ní raibh cead tobac a chaitheamh amuigh san áit ina rabhamair ag obair ach bhí seomra amháin curtha ar leataobh don gcúram sin. Bhí an seomra lán go doras nuair a chuamair isteach. Shín George chugamsa leath dá cheapaire féin agus shíneas-sa mo bhosca toitíní chuige. Chuir sé cogar i mo chluais agus dúirt gan faic a ligean orm ach go raibh daoine ag faire orainn.
