Pentecost

From The War on Whitsunday
Today is Pentecost, one of the three chief festivals in the Western Christian church year. It would be hard to imagine a complete lack of coverage of Christmas or Easter but Pentecost, the least commercial or secularized of the three days, doesn’t receive much media coverage at all.
I rather like it that way.

Heard in Church

Today is the Feast of Pentecost. At St. Mary's, as at other churches I have known, part of one of the Bible lessons was read in multiple foreign languages (See Acts 2: 1-11). Afterwards a small but very clear voice in the congregation said: "That was freaky."

Show Time!

Again following-up on last night's post from [info]mia_mcdavid, yesterday we loaded [info]colgaffneyis trailer for our first camping show of the season, in Charles City, Iowa. Setup is Thursday evening, down there. I am busy Monday (Irish Class), Tuesday ([info]colgaffneyis dance), and Wednesday (Church choir), so I got my traveling woodworking kit together (I hope) this afternoon, and did most of my other packing this evening.

They knew it was coming

From the Daily Mail: Family holidays ruined by earliest Easter in 90 years

God Plays Dice refers to this column, introducing a nice discussion of how the date of Easter is calculated. At the end of it she refers back to it, commenting
And I have no sympathy for the people quoted in that article. They've known this was coming since 1752, when the UK changed over to the Gregorian calendar.

Via The Angels are in the Details, which asks some good questions and comments:
This going to be a major shock for the old “Gorby is the Antichrist” crowd. Or maybe not. After all, it seems that Gorbachev has embraced an ancient, liturgical form of the faith.

My weekend here

[info]mia_mcdavid is in Michigan for the weekend and the first couple days of next week. Her aunt died after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. She has posted about it, most recently here.

I cleaned off my workbench this morning, and am trying to make some progress on at least some of my unfinished projects. Quite a list )

Tomorrow I will go to Church in the morning, get there early for choir rehearsal. It will be Palm Sunday and there will be a lot going on. It occurred last week that joining the choir in the middle of Lent may not have been good timing. We have been working hard on music for Holy Week, the busiest time in the Church Year. However, it is certainly interesting.

After church I am going to the Day of Irish dance in downtown St. Paul, where I will be working at the Gaeltacht Minnesota table.

I hope their smoke detectors are working!

From a well-intentioned Washington Post column:
Some evangelical churches offer confession and weekly communion. They distribute ashes on Ash Wednesday and light Advent calendars at Christmastime.

Busy....

As [info]mia_mcdavid forecast, we had a busy weekend. [info]colgaffneyis basket making workshop yesterday was interesting and funbasketmaking )

The workshop, last night's party, and church this morning (on top of the change to Daylight Savings Time) meant that we were really on the go. OTOH, driving home from Church at noon today I had the feeling that we were really done with what we had to do for the weekend. During the afternoon I mended some clothes and then worked some more on my basket. Afterwards I did some shopping for dinner. While I was at the store [info]mia_mcdavid called on my cell phone, asking me to buy more potatoes. She asked for red potatoes, but, thinking of [info]haddayr's latest story, I suggested Yukon Gold as an alternative. They were just fine.

Super Fat Tuesday

Today is "Super Tuesday" in the U.S. political process. It is also, in the Western Church Calendar, Shrove Tuesday, the eve of Lent. Not a problem for the churches. There are no special liturgical observances for the day. Pancake suppers are frequently found, but they are social (and perhaps fund-raising) events with no sense of religious obligation. So I was not surprised to see a notice at my church that there would be nothing happening on Shrove Tuesday this year: We were all encouraged to do our civic duty and attended our political party caucuses. No problem.

However, outside of the churches, some people are more upset:Read about Pancake day )

Good Weekend

Late last week at work was difficult, and when I got home Friday night I was in something of a funk about all I had to do. However, I settled down to what had to be done, did it (insert Powdermilk Biscuits commercial) and had a good time.

The opening hymn today in church was St. Patrick's Breastplace. The English translation and the current tune are quite modern, but the Gaelic words were ancient in [info]colgaffneyis time, originally in Old Irish.Read more... )

Icons and visions

A remark by the rector of our church, in this morning's sermon, reminded me of visit I made in 1973 to the house of the Order of the Holy Cross in Santa Barbara, California. There I met Fr. John Walsted, who is an icon painter. Our talks made a deep impression on me, which sustained me through the dark years when we were realizing the full extent of our son Tom's disability. I had the good fortune to meet him again in 2003, and to thank him for what he had said, and shown, three decades earlier.

Busy Weekend at Church

This evening St. Mary's is having a Service of Lessons and Carols, followed by a festive dinner. Yesterday I was at the church all morning helping to decorate and move furniture.

Mia stayed home this morning, but I came in for the service. I did not want to miss an Advent Service, and I wanted to satisfy my curiosity about a bit of liturgical trivia: Read more... )

After the service I stayed around to help cook dinner. This was a superbly organized and managed effort.

Mia got here about 2 and has been rehearsing with the choir. More later--the service is about to start.
